Fight the Power

Twenty one years ago 'Fight the Power' by Public Enemy was released. It's just as relevant today as it was then as every government in the world still needs to be put in its place by the people. For example, today in Belfast there is a protest against the 'Public Assemblies Bill'. Essentially this bill proposes that any public gathering with more than 50 people must request permission at least 37 days beforehand. If this law existed last year, the protest outside City Hall in reaction to the renewed violence of the CIRA would have been an illegal protest. The protest in support of immigrants who were being forced out of their homes would have been illegal. There are people who can word this better. Like Chuck D and Flava Flav.

Stand up and tell the world we don't want fascist, draconian laws. Fight the power people.

Evel

I was asked tonight what We Want Blood sound like and why we have no recordings on this here blog yet. Well the simple answer is because we don't have any recordings. But to give you a taste of what We Want Blood are like, here's a clip which I feel sums us up nicely.

A Haiku about Bruce Willis

I recently read this book.

It is spectacular. It briefly got me into haikus before something else came along to distract me. During the week or so I was having a love affair with the haiku I discovered I was quite adapt at creating a haiku. While bragging about this at length and great volume to anyone who would listen I was inevitably challenged to do a haiku. About Bruce Willis. So I did. Here it is.

Die Hard 4.0
Where did it all go so wrong?
Bruce, you sold out dude.

See, told you I was good at them.

Stag Do!

A while back Mr wonderful and myself played in a band called Saint Dude's (although if you're reading this you probably know that already) with a little man called James Heaney. Well James is getting married soon and tomorrow (well, in six hours) i'm going to his stag do! Its only the second one i've been to but I imagine it'll be something like this.

I can't wait!!

Professor Poliakoff

Look up 'mad scientist' in your picture dictionary and there'll be a picture of this guy.

He's Professor Martyn Poliakoff and he reckons the Worlds Cup trophy isn't solid gold at all!! He isn't very interested in football but is so spiteful that when he isn't stealing Phil Spector's court wig he's spends his time researching the break-down of the trophy just to rub it in our faces that it isn't real. Up yours professor!

In his defense though he does say many awesome things such as:
"a big waste of gold" - as clearly gold is often used in a productive way;
"I think - and I have no means of knowing..." - you have to love a scientist who just makes stuff up;
"according to my calculations" - lets be honest, that's what every mad scientist should say at the start of every sentence.

So Professor Martyn Polikoff,  while I'm not happy that you're having a go at the Worlds Cup trophy and trying to ruin lil' Diego's dreams, I still take my hat off to you as you are clearly bonkers, will probably one day rule us all, and you have way too much time on your hands. Your giant, giant hands.

Argentina vs Nigeria

Here's what i've noticed during the first half of Argentina vs Nigeria.
- Diego Maradona looks very professional in his wee suit and tiny, tiny shoes
- I can't help but wonder if someone died in that suit
- Nigerians speak English as I saw one fella clearly mouth the words 'fuck sake' in English
- Some fella got one right in the crigs, or else he felt very tense and decided to have a wee tug in the middle of the pitch as he didn't seem to get hit in the crigs
- Messi and Shittu... there's a joke there somewhere

That's all and now I have to go to work so no more interesting things i've noticed.

Loretta Lynn

So my housemate Kim has been listening to Loretta Lynn flat out lately which has in turn got me listening to Loretta Lynn flat out. My favourite song of her's is 'She's Got You' (originally by Patsy Cline) but the only video of it I could find has that horrible 80's production on it where it seemed to be a good idea to use a cheap keyboard set to 'piano' instead of using a piano. I guess country music was trying to be more relevant by using modern instruments. It failed. Stick to your guns country music, acoustic everything works better for you.

Anyway, here's Patsy Cline singing 'She's Got You'.

Mudhoney

Seeing as Mudhoney have just been announced for playing Belfast in October I thought i'd take this opportunity to post a Mudhoney related video. Here they are as The Junkyard Dogs (actually the Supersuckers but Mark Arm was on the album somewhere and the vocals at the end of this kinda sound like him).

Here's an actual Mudhoney video.

I've just remembered that I saw Mudhoney in Dublin back in 1995. I didn't really know them at the time but they were awesome.

So uh, we'd love to open for Mudhoney so email Strange Victory and request that We Want Blood get the support for this show. We'll be your best friend! Thanks chums.

Yakuza

Here's the video for 'West of the Best' by Yakuza taken from their still unreleased second album. These guys are stalwarts and I think the longest running band in Belfast. I'm pretty sure Yakuza were the first local band I went to see way back in 1997 (how depressing is it that 1997 is "way back"?) back when they were playing Pixies covers. In fact i've known most of these guys my entire life. I've known Davy and Philly since I was four years old and used to sit beside Roni in GCSE French - that's neither here nor there though.

Anyway, here's 'West of the Best'.

We Want Blood

I've just realised that even though this is the blog for the band I haven't really mentioned the band yet. What a maroon! Who are we? What do we do? All that bollocks!

Well we're 'Mr Wonderful' Paul McStravick (guitar), 'Iron' Ben McAuley (drums), Cathal 'Devil Anse' Cully (bass), and Ciaran 'White Dynamite' Hughes (guitar/vocals).

Hmm... I had written out a whole big thing there but it was boring as fuck so I deleted it again. Lets just say We Want Blood play rock 'n' roll... and We Want Blood have come for your children.

Panda Kopanda

I've been posting videos of bands I saw and loved while I was in Melbourne so why the hell haven't I done the same for Belfast bands? Actually its probably because there's not a lot of videos by Belfast bands I like (I hope that statement gets proven wrong btw).

Anyway, here's the video for 'Spirals' by Panda Kopanda. It was filmed by Will McConnell at a show I put on a few years ago. An interesting(?) note for fact fans is that the video features Iron Ben's special lady friend (she's one of the lovely girls sitting at the table).

During the filming Will moved a light we had set up on stage so he could have better light for his filming; well the light wasn't moved back and someone accidentally threw a cardigan on the light which almost led to the whole place going up in flames. Good times.

Curfew 2010

Pete Jez (one of the nicest men in the world) is putting Curfew on again this year; here's what he says:
"So around this time for the last 8 years I've announced the annual Curfew line up...around this time for the last 4 years I keep saying this is the last. THIS IS THE LAST!

I guess the original need for Curfew has passed over the last few years and I cant stress how great that is. With so much stuff happening in July there's something to cater for everyone; it really is no different than any other month.

Curfew has always brought together a diverse and high standard of musical endeavours and this year will be no different. As always we will be running the weekend closest to the 12th of July as always."

And here's the line-up:
FRI 9th JULY // 7pm
Slomatics
We Want Blood
Jogging
Before Machines
Wonder Villains
Selaah
Secret Teeth
Hands Up Who Wants To Die

SAT 10th JULY // 7pm
Girls Names
Strait Laces
Black Bear Saloon
SKP
Third Man Theme
The Cities We Captured
Kiriath

Yup, that's us up there between Slomatics and Jogging. Yup, I think that means we're on second last on our first show. I think other people are excited about seeing us.

This is an awesome line-up! I'm very excited about playing with our friends (especially Third Man Theme who are also making their debut) and can't wait to see the likes of Hands Up Who Wants To Die, Jogging, and Wonder Villains who i've heard great things about. All we have to do now is finish writing some songs. WOO HOO!!!

Here's the Curfew Facebook page.

Saturday 5 June 2010

The Worlds Cup

It's that time of year again so here's what I reckon is the best goal ever scored in the Worlds Cup. It is of course Diego Maradona embarrassing England at Mexico '86. Apparently Maradona scored another goal in this game but it never gets mentioned much.

Also, feel free to note the worst commentary ever.

COME ON FOOTBALL!

Friday 4 June 2010

Gig time bitches!

So we've finally confirmed our first show. Don't have all the details yet but it'll be as part of Curfew 2010 and is on Friday 9th July. I probably should have waited until everything was confirmed but i'm too excited.

And to whet your appetite here's some picture of us in the dungeon perfecting our magic.

Handsome devils.
